I love eating seeds. In London I often buy some delicious roasted and seasoned seed mixes to snack on made by a company called Munchy Seeds. Alas I have been unable to find an equivalent here in San Francisco.

One of my new years resolutions is to get Hubby and myself eating more healthily, so on waking up this morning, I decided to try my hand at making my own seasoned seeds. These seeds are great to snack on, but are also lovely in salads and sprinkled on soups!

I had bought a 1lb bag of raw shelled sunflower seeds from Trader Joe’s last week in anticipation, so I had plenty of raw material to experiment with. I made the following mixes:

1. Sunflower Seeds, Sesame Seeds and Bragg’s Liquid Aminos – I recently discovered Bragg’s after buying some divine roasted cashews seasoned with the stuff from a bulk bin in my local co-operative grocery store, Rainbow. It is similar in some ways to Soy Sauce, but milder. I bought mine in a fantastic spray bottle, which is very convenient. I spray it on meat and fish and veggies as well to add more flavor. It seems to be available in most grocery stores here

2. Sunflower Seeds and Soy Sauce

3. Sunflower Seeds, Sesame Seeds, Salt and Lemon Juice

4. Sunflower Seeds and Worcester Sauce

#1, #2 and #3 were delicious. #4 was a flop. I suppose three out of four is not a bad success rate!

Here’s what I did:

1. Toasted the sunflower seeds in a non stick frying pan

2. Added the seasoning and toasted for a further minute to dry out the seasoning

3. Spread the seeds out thinly in a large bowl to cool

4. In the mixes which included sesame seeds, I toasted the sesame seeds without seasoning until fragrant and mixed the seasoned sunflower seeds in with them

Variations:
Other seasonings which I think will work are
– Lime Juice and Chilli Flakes or Paprika
– Cajun seasonings
